Marcus Books Mural

A beautiful merging of streetart and literature covers the walls of Marcus Books in Oakland, the oldest black bookstore in the country founded by Julian and Raye Richardson in 1960. Created just a few months ago with the help of the Community Rejuvenation Project, the powerful mural captures the colorful history of writers and their books and the impact they have on the community and society as a whole. It is a fitting tribute to a bookstore that has been the hub of the city’s black culture for over a half a century.
