If anyone’s paying attention, the quizzes on Facebook are providing invaluable information to marketing/advertising professionals. What are your favorite foods, books, movies, ad nauseum give advertisers a wealth of information to attain with the push of a button. We make the information so readily available without them having to build the questionnaires. And who knows, they could be making some of the quizzes up themselves. If only I had a dollar for everytime I answered a quiz or visited a website (and $5 if I bought something).
Don’t get me wrong, I love the value of social media, but it’s annoying that marketers use this info when guileless consumers are just having fun. We consumers have so much power and could take advantage of having our opinions that we so freely dispense. There was a time when advertisers would have to bring in a group of people that fell into their marketing demographic and pay them to find out their likes and dislikes. If a big company like Coca-Cola posts one of their quizzes on Facebook, the Facebook user should get paid to take the quiz. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money, it’s just the principal.
Maybe this will all take shape when companies take over social media and rules, regulations enter the picture. Until then, say what you want but know that more than just your friends care about what you love.
