Miami graffiti artist, Israel “Reefa” Hernandez, was tagging an abandoned McDonalds when he was tased in the chest by police after he decided to run. The shock from the taser killed him. He was only 18-years-old. His death has prompted a debate as to whether the punishment fits the “crime”, the use of tasers, police brutality and brings attention to graffiti as more of an artform than a crime. Tributes tagged as #ripreefa have appeared in the graffiti community from Miami to Australia. Originally from Columbia, Hernandez was a talented rising artist, his signature work of a flower with an eye in the center was only the beginning of what was sure to be a flourishing career, so sadly cut short.
