Abandoned Beauty

These images capture a place frozen in time–abandoned because of natural or man-made disaster (above, an abandoned amusement park in Chernobyl). Even in their desolation they are somehow beautiful and mesmerizing.

Photo 1: Pripyat, a city of nearly 50,000, was totally abandoned after the nearby Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 and resembles an apocalyptic movie. Due to radiation, it has been left untouched ever since the incident and will be for many thousands of years. (Barry Mangham)

Photos 2 & 3: Severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Six Flags Jazzland has been abandoned ever since. (Keoni Cabral, lostlosangeles)

Photo 4: Bannerman Castle, Pollepel Island, New York, was built for storage space to accommodate the American military surplus from the war with the Spanish. After 200lbs of ammunition exploded in 1920, much of the castle was destroyed and the rest abandoned. (artificialowl.net)
