Happy New Year!!

Back in the 40s, 50s and 60s, San Francisco had a tradition of showering the streets in the Financial District with calendar pages on New Year’s Eve. It looked like a blizzard hit–great for a city that never gets any snow!!

The tradition ended because it was a mess to clean up. It probably would have died out anyway because none of the new skyscrapers have windows that open!

  1. Took part in the last “sanctioned” calendar page toss in downtown Oakland in the late 80’s. The tradition was dying anyway for all the reasons you mentioned. Our older building had windows that opened but folks from most of the newer buildings just came outside and tossed their pages into the air; not the same thing.
